Day 11, 30th August Grundarfjordur Iceland.
Had an early start to the day, it was warmer than yesterday at 11 degrees. The ship was docking at 8.00am and as it’s a tender port, need to be organized to get on one of the first tenders which we did. It is a very small town with population under 700 we decided to go on a tour today after checking out what was to be seen and this tour visited 4 different sites, of which 3 were quite a distance from the town. Was a lovely tour as we got to see so much of the countryside and had a really good tour guide who was funny and also very informative. First stop was to see an old lighthouse, and 2 large columns of basalt rocks that are all that is left from a volcano many thousand of years ago, to the Icelandic people they are trolls and have a very special history relating to there Viking heritage. Next stop was to the Leiff Erickson memorial who was the first Viking and he also lived in this region it was made of rocks and you could crawl through the middle of it. At the same stop we walked down to the waters edge to view the rock formations made by all the volcanoes when Iceland was forming again very beautiful to see. Had a quick snack in the little café then it was on to an extinct volcano which has stairs up the side of it so you can climb it and see inside, Pete and Julie did that I decided against it was very steep and no handrail plus lots and lots of steps. From there we went to Mt Kirkjufell which is the most photographed mountain in Iceland, its not very tall at just 463mtrs but was “Arrow Head Mountain” on game of thrones, its known as church island over here. Just across the road from that is Kirkjufellsfoss which is a small but beautiful series of waterfalls. In the distance you can see Grundarfoss waterfall which is 70 meters deep and one of the highest waterfalls in West Iceland. After that it was back to port onto the tender and back to the ship in time for a late lunch then happy hour with trivia which was fun, we didn’t win but came close.
Fantastic pictures! Looks like a fantastic spot. The thermal pools sound a bit grim!!
