Day 7, 26th August Lerwick Shetland Islands
A bit later
start today as we didn’t arrive in Lerwick until 10.00am so we had a leisurely breakfast
whilst waiting for the ship to lower the tenders to go ashore. Was a lovely day
weather wise no rain and not to cold so good for sightseeing. After getting off
the tender we had a look around and found a pub with free WIFI then walked up
to see the lovely old shops in the town from there we walked past the wall of
the old fort and on to the beautiful police station and town hall which was
built in 188. The hall is credited with having some gorgeous, stained windows
some of which are supposed to be the best in Britain, we would have liked to
had a look inside the hall but they had a wedding on so we couldn’t go in they
had a piper out the front. From there we walked back to the dock and after a
while managed to get a taxi driven by Michael who took us on a tour first up was
the Broch of Clickimin which is a very well preserved stone round house and
over 1000 years old, these stone round houses are only found in Scotland. From
there we went on to Galloway which was beautiful and home to a very old Castle
that they are currently renovating to make it safe for visitors, it would have
been great to see inside as Michael said it has lots of history attached to it.
We also looked at quite a few beautiful parts of the countryside as well as Shetland
ponies and Scottish sheep before returning to Lerwick for a last look at the
town this town has very strong ties to the Vikings with quite a lot of history.
I love Scottland, looks like you guy's are having a great time.
