Day 9, 28th August Akureyri Iceland
Cruised up the very pretty Eyjafjordur fjord in the morning whilst having breaksfast, as the ship was not docking in Akureyri until 11.00am. Akureyri is only 100 klms from the arctic circle and was originally settled in the 9th century by the Vikings. After we docked we went ashore to hire a car for the day so we could have a good look around the country side. We hired a cute little Hyundai from avis which was perfect first stop was Godafoss waterfall which is about 45 minutes out of town its not a huge waterfall its 12 metres high and 30 metres wide but very impressive with the amount of water that crashes down. A bonus was it was very flat ground so easy to walk around. From there we drove to the thermal pools which was a lovely drive with great scenery along the way. The thermal pools were quite busy and the smell was atrocious not sure how people could enjoy bathing in them. From there it was back to town and we went to have a look at the church it was meant to have 120 steps up to it and Pete and Julie were looking forward to climbing them all, unfortunately when we got there they are renovating the access and the stairs have been taken away so we drove up to the car park and went inside to have a look. Was quite nice inside and strangely enough they had a model ship hanging from the ceiling at the back of the church quite strange. We then went for a drive around the town before going back to the ship for dinner. The red stop streetlights in town are heart shaped very unusual, they have quite a lot of red heats around the town to try and keep their citizens spirits up especially when they have months with very little sunlight. After dinner we went to see a movie called Rams about 2 brothers who didn’t talk and how they eventually got to together to try and save their sheep from a disease it was set in Iceland and a bit strange.
