Day 29, 19th September Hohenschwangau to Regensberg Germany
We had a lovely breakfast then loaded our bags into the car and headed to the gondola that takes you up the mountain, it has great views on the way of the Neuschwanstein castle and valley. Was a quick trip and provided amazing views of the valley, castle and also all the towns around it after taking some pics we jumped back in the gondola to get our car and take a few more pics in the town before heading for Regensberg.
We booked into a nice hotel just on the edge of the old town and once we
had put our bags in the room we were off to explore. It’s a beautiful old town
full of so much history, we looked at the 12th century Stone Bridge
that crosses the Rhine, and on the banks next to it Historische Wurstkuche which
is a restaurant that has been consistently in operation since 1846AD, it was
originally owned by the city but they sold it in 1806 and the descendants of the
family who purchased it, still own and run it today. We also went to St Peters
Cathedral which opened in 1520 we couldn’t go inside it was closed so off to
Porta Praeoria which is the remains of a Roman Gate from 2nd century
AD.
While attempting to find another church which we could see the spires of
through a lot of foliage we ended up driving through a gateway that we thought
was the gardens to the church to, our surprise we quickly realized we were in a
very large cemetery. The tracks were quite small and crossed themselves numerous
times which made getting out very hard. We kept finding gates, but they were
all locked and we tried asking for help from the few people we saw but they
couldn’t really understand us, and one said they had never seen a car in there
so we think the tracks were actually walking tracks. We persevered and I think
more by luck than anything else managed to find the open gate.
So back to the hotel we went, now then things continue to go wrong we
decided to go out for dinner as the restaurant at the hotel is closed and not
anything else nearby. We found a great restaurant Kullmans that’s an American
Diner and has been around since 1924 the food was lovely so were the drinks.
When we went back to the car we realized that we had a flat back tire and no
spare, it was quite a rip in the side wall think it might have happened when we
hit a kerb on the way to dinner. So started
an extremely long series of phone calls as no one at Europcar in Germany would
do anything until we spoke with Europcar in Italy then we had the problem of
them both saying we needed to speak to the other one again, after about 2 hours
a town truck arrived and towed our car away. The we couldn’t get a taxi but a
young guy working in the service station next door used his phone and rang one
for us by now it was almost midnight.
Time for Bed.
