Day 31, 21st September Prague to Vienna via Cesky Krumlov
We finally got a replacement car, a Lynk & Co hybrid, not as big but still we could continue our trip.
After settling in we decided it was time to explore Prague as we had so
many sites we wanted to see. We were lucky to be staying in the old city Stre
Mesto so first stop was old town square which dates back to the 10th
century. The old town hall dates back to 1338 it’s a gothic building and its
tower is 66 meters high and provides stunning views of the city, it houses one
of the only three remaining astronomical clocks in the world and is the only
one still working, every hour between 9am and 11pm the three apostles appear
but we didn’t have time to wait had just missed them, also located here is the
14th century Church of our Lady before Tyn which has 2 80mtr towers along
with a great statue and the other beautiful old buildings this was a great
place to start exploring. We decided to hop on the little train for a tour of
all the city sites as it took you to 4 different areas and was a different way to
see everything as it is a very large area to cover its on both sides of the
river. Some of the places we saw were: National Theatre opened 1881 Municipal House built 1905-1911 National Theatre 1881 Prague Castle complex which dates back to
870AD and is the largest ancient castle in the world its made up lots of
buildings some of the most important ones are St Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal
Palace, Belvedere Palace and Golden Lane these buildings cover every style of
architecture. After this tour we decided to head back for dinner and bed. Next
morning before leaving for Cesky Krumlov we went and had a walk on Charles Bridge they
started building it in 1357 and was completed in 1402 it has a tower at each
end one is the Old Town Bridge Tower the other one is the Lesser Bridge Tower
and along with the 30 statues of saints on the bridge makes for an unforgettable
place to visit and walk along.
Arrived in Cesky Kumlov which was even better than we thought it would
be wish we had more time to stay there overnight it was so good. It’s a world
heritage site that dates back to 1240 and was lucky enough to escape any bombings
in WW2. The 13th century castle has gothic, renaissance and baroque
features and is stunning. The town is like it came from a fairy tale with
beautiful little squares and gardens, the houses are quaint the main street is
called Latran its also the name for the area and at one end is a wooden bridge
called Lazebnicky and the other Budejovicka gate. Spent a few hours here before
heading off to Vienna.
